An AI Agent Reportedly Deleted a Swedish Reality Show’s Entire Season
The upcoming season of The Challenge Sverige was wiped weeks before its premiere, and the files could not be recovered. The broadcaster blames a failed backup system and “human factors” rather than the AI agent itself, and the show has been pushed to next year.
October 15 — As AI agents such as Claude and Muse become more common, an AI going off the rails is hardly news any more; blaming the AI when something goes wrong has almost become a habit.
The Swedish reality competition show The Challenge Sverige has recently been caught up in just such a controversy.
On the 14th local time, the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet revealed an almost unbelievable incident: an AI agent is said to have deleted the entire upcoming season of The Challenge Sverige, just weeks before the premiere.
The paper learned that the deleted editing files could not be recovered, and that the production company Mastiff had to put its team to work re-editing the whole season from scratch.
According to people familiar with the matter, the season was deleted after Mastiff gave the agent access to its servers. A year’s work was lost, and hundreds of staff had to go back to production.
The new season had been due to air on 22 November. The broadcaster TV4 confirmed that the show had been postponed to next year because of a “technical fault,” but said it did not know whether the files had been deleted by an AI agent.
After the report was published, TV4’s head of programming, Mia Lindqvist, tried to take some of the blame off AI, saying the incident was not caused by an AI agent acting on its own. “Most production companies use AI in their work now, but that is a completely different matter,” she said in response. “The real problem is that the backup system failed, which meant the whole season had to be re-edited. The original footage is still there, so the material itself is fine — it will just inevitably take time.”
Lindqvist ultimately blamed “human factors” rather than AI. Her explanation, however, does not completely rule out AI’s involvement in the incident.
When Aftonbladet told the show’s host, Ahmed Berhan, the news, he did not seem too shaken. Laughing, he said: “Really?! I knew AI would be the death of me sooner or later. This is just the beginning.”
