CEO Steve Huffman says a login-first model improves personalisation and ad targeting and, above all, keeps AI models from crawling the site. Guests were 59% of daily active users last quarter.

October 30 — Reddit’s interface and experience are about to change dramatically, and not just because of yesterday’s revamp of its “recommended for you” and “followed” feeds. Reddit is preparing a far-reaching change that could fundamentally alter how millions of users reach the platform.

Earlier today, CEO Steve Huffman announced that the platform will gradually shift to a login-first browsing model. Users are broadly unhappy about it.

The community platform, launched in 2005, has long let visitors browse without logging in. Guests could not use every feature, of course, but aside from the old interface old.reddit and age-restricted content, they could browse freely. Now Reddit plans to change that rule.

Huffman gave his reasons. He wrote that moving to a login-first model improves content personalisation, lifts engagement, makes it easier to serve better-targeted ads, and — most importantly — stops AI models from crawling the site.

In Reddit’s third-quarter shareholder letter, Huffman wrote:

“Moving to a login-first browsing model will give users the best Reddit experience and help them find the content and communities most relevant to them. It’s better for the business too: we get more user signals for ad targeting, and being logged in usually correlates with higher engagement. At the same time, it helps protect Reddit’s extremely valuable content dataset and lets us better adapt to new regulations rolling out around the world.”

According to the letter, Reddit had 130.3 million daily unique visitors in the third quarter of 2026 — 76.8 million guests and 53.5 million logged-in users. In other words, 59% of active users last quarter visited as guests. The change therefore affects most daily active users, not a small slice of them.

Fortunately, Reddit will not put everything behind a login. Describing where the line falls, Huffman said the Reddit home page will remain open to everyone.

“Keeping the home page open to guests is practical and important. Of course we want people to share posts, and we want visitors arriving from search engines or external links to be able to see what the link points to.”

Unsurprisingly, the plan has not won users over, as the comments under Huffman’s post make clear. One asked whether looking up a solution on the fly will now trigger constant login prompts; Huffman replied that the company still needs to test and find the right balance, adding: “One-off visitors arriving via a shared link or a search result are not the main target of this change.”

Many users also argue that the platform should focus on adding features and improving the existing experience rather than raising the barrier to entry. Some worry Reddit will become like X or Pinterest, where opening a link someone shared immediately triggers a login prompt.

Huffman said the company is still working out the right permission model and will test different approaches in some markets outside the US over the next few months.
