A Neuralink Implant Let an ALS Patient Speak at 75 Words a Minute
马斯克旗下脑机公司 Neuralink 新突破:渐冻症患者植入首周实现每分钟 75 词输出,接近正常对话
Neuralink 公布语音恢复项目 VOICE 早期结果:一名渐冻症参与者在使用的第一周即达到每分钟 75 词输出,在 12.5 万词词库下词错误率 5.8%;研究计划招募约 6 人,主要指标是植入后 12 个月内的不良事件,成果尚未经同行评审。
Neuralink says one participant in its VOICE trial hit 75 words per minute in the first week, with a 5.8% word error rate on a 125,000-word vocabulary — though the data cover a single person and are not yet peer reviewed.
October 30 — Neuralink, the brain-computer interface company owned by Elon Musk, published a post on 28 October detailing early feasibility results from its speech-restoration programme VOICE, which lets a participant with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) convert brain signals into text and speech at close to conversational speed.
According to the post, one participant reached 75 words per minute (WPM) in their first week of use; with a vocabulary of 125,000 words, the word error rate (WER) was 5.8% — roughly one error in every 17 words.
The company said the study’s lead, Dr Nader Pouratian, presented the data at the 2026 NEALS annual meeting. The study plans to enrol about six participants who have lost the ability to communicate through ALS, spinal cord injury or stroke; the primary measure is device- or procedure-related adverse events within 12 months of implantation, with speech performance a secondary measure.
For ALS patients, the disease progressively damages the ability to speak and type. If a brain-computer interface can reliably decode “what you want to say” into text and then synthesise speech, it could markedly lower the barrier to communicating with others.
The 75 words per minute reported here is already in the range that can support fairly fluid conversation, and a 5.8% error rate means the system still preserves most of the meaning across a large vocabulary.
Neuralink is currently disclosing results through social media and academic conferences and has not yet published a full peer-reviewed paper; the figures come from a single participant, and the company has not said what task was tested, how text and speech output performed separately, or how stable the data and long-term results are.
