After about 300 iterations, Surface engineers built the first magnetic USB-C connector. A 0.7 mm shift in magnet position turned a fiddly final push into a cable that guides itself into place.

October 30 — Marcus Ash, who leads design and development for Windows + Devices at Microsoft, posted on X today (30 October) with more detail on the world’s first built-in magnetic USB-C connector.

On 8 October this outlet reported that Jit Hirani, chief designer for Surface, said: “During development of Surface Laptop Ultra our engineering team went through about 300 iterations to create the world’s first product with a built-in magnetic USB-C port. From the start, the one constraint was that we could not change the universal USB-C connector.”

In the latest post, Ash shared more detail: the design went through hundreds of prototypes, and his favourite change was moving the magnets by just 0.7 mm, which turned the connection from “you have to give it a final push” into “it glides into place on its own”.

Previously, bringing the cable close might still need a manual nudge; after the change, the magnets pull the connector into the right position as it approaches. The tiny shift also changed the guiding force lines and the magnetic path, so users no longer need to align it precisely — the connector finds its own centre. Microsoft says a connection sound and an LED make it clearer that the cable is properly attached.

Ash said the team experimented repeatedly with magnet size, position, pull force and cable alignment, and used simulation and multiple manufacturing iterations to reproduce the ideal feel in the shipping product. The connector also passed thousands of insertion cycles, off-axis pull tests and simulated trips over the cable to verify durability.

The cable is reversible and can charge other USB-C devices such as phones. Ash said that to refine this seemingly small interaction, the team put substantial work into industrial design, mechanical engineering, reliability and manufacturing.
