Google Will Switch Off AI for School Accounts by Default — and Search Goes With It
From 2027, school-managed K-12 accounts need an administrator to opt in before students can use Gemini or even Google Search. Schools cannot keep plain search while dropping the AI layer.
Google will turn its AI features off by default for school-managed accounts from 2027, meaning administrators must opt in before students can use Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom or Google Search. The change was announced on 3 November, after consultation with schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers.
That last item on the list is the awkward one. In a school that decides to switch AI off entirely, students will also lose Google Search. Chris Phillips, who runs Google's education business, told the New York Times that search and AI are now so intertwined that the two cannot be prised apart: a student who tries to search will see a message from the school explaining that the service is disabled.
The coupling is the controversy. Schools cannot currently keep the plain list of links while dropping AI Overviews, the generated summaries that sit above the results. An institution that wants students to search, compare sources and judge them for themselves therefore has to accept the AI layer too — or give up search altogether.
Google frames the change as handing control back. Defaults matter: a feature that is on unless somebody turns it off gets used; one that stays off until a head teacher signs a form does not. From 2027, the second rule will apply to K-12 accounts, the years from kindergarten to the end of high school.
The company is also promoting Guided Learning, a mode that asks the student questions and walks through a problem step by step instead of producing an answer. It is being added to Google Classroom and will be folded into Search for student accounts, starting with a pilot in some American schools.
The backdrop is a long argument about what AI does to learning. Teachers and parents have worried that a tool which answers instantly shortens the distance between a question and a finished homework sheet, and that the thinking in between quietly disappears.
Opting in is a reasonable answer to that worry. Bundling search with the AI is a harder sell, because it turns a pedagogical choice into a choice about whether students can look things up at all.

学校目前无法在去掉 AI Overviews(显示在结果上方的生成式摘要)的同时保留纯链接列表。
