Mercedes Is Dropping Level 3, Because Asking a Driver to Stay Ready Is the Hard Part
Drive Pilot topped out at 64 km/h and only on approved roads. Mercedes now sells a broader Level 2 suite and aims straight at Level 4 after 2030.
Mercedes-Benz was among the first carmakers to put a Level 3 automated driving system on sale in the United States. Its newest S-Class in that market does not have one — and the company's chief technology officer says that is the lesson.
“Sometimes launching technology too early means you then have to go back and research what customers actually need,” Jörg Burzer said at a media roundtable, according to Road & Track. The original system was practical only in a narrow sense, he argued, so the priority now is a more complete Level 2 suite, with Level 4 as the eventual target and Level 3 skipped.
Drive Pilot, approved for US use in 2023, was the first such system to let a driver stop watching the road under defined conditions. Its ceiling was 64 km/h, which confined it largely to traffic jams, and it worked only on approved stretches of road. That is a real capability and a poor fit for most motorway driving.
The replacement is a Level 2 system called MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, which Mercedes says handles more of a journey from start to finish: lane changes, junctions, turns, and recognising traffic lights, on highways and in cities. The new S-Class carries up to 27 sensors to support it. Drivers still have to watch the road and be ready to take over.
Whether that is genuinely more useful, or simply easier to sell, is a fair question — but the industry logic is sound. Level 3 sits in an awkward middle: the car does the work, yet the driver must stay available to intervene, which is a hard state to ask a human to hold for long. Level 2 is honest about the division of labour; Level 4 removes the driver entirely.
Burzer expects Level 4 in production after 2030, rolled out gradually rather than everywhere at once. The gap between the first Level 3 approval and that date will be roughly a decade, which says something about how much harder the last step is than the announcement.
